Cocker spaniels are one of the UK’s most popular dog breeds and for good reason! There are so many factors why this breed makes the perfect pet! They’re very sweet-natured and are incredibly devoted and affectionate creatures. Our Cocker Spaniel owner’s guide will give you a great insight into these wonderful pets.

The Cocker Spaniel would best suit an active home, as their high energy levels require a good amount of exercise and mental stimulation to keep them happy, so interesting walks and play are a must! They are mostly seen with a waggy tail and nose to the floor doing what they love – following scent!  They have also been known as the ‘Merry Spaniel’ due to their constantly wagging tail.

What is the difference between the American and English Cocker Spaniel

There are two varieties of this breed, the English Cocker Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel. The main difference in appearance between the two is their head shape; The English Cocker Spaniel has a wider head and longer muzzle and is also taller than the American Cocker.  They are both very sweet and loving breeds, the main difference in their character being that the American variety may have less of a hunting instinct compared to the English Cocker

The English Cocker Spaniel also has two varieties of its own, the show, and the working type. Show Spaniels tend to have longer and lower set ears, a longer coat and longer legs than the working type.

Where do Cocker Spaniels come from?

Spaniels have been known throughout history and art approximately as far as the 16th century, however it wasn’t until the 1890s that the Cocker Spaniel and the Springer Spaniel were recognised as independent breeds. In the UK, Cockers were originally bred for hunting, and this is where their name originated from, as they were used to primarily hunt the Eurasian Woodcock.

Are Cocker Spaniels good house dogs?

The Cocker Spaniel breed is know for their high energy levels and are often seen darting around in every direction when out on their walks. However, they equally love to snuggle up for a snooze, as do most dogs! They make great house dogs but equally need plenty of exercise outside. If you are thinking of welcoming home a Cocker Spaniel puppy, make sure you have plenty of opportunities to keep them stimulated as they are a very intelligent breed who learn very quickly.

Are Cocker Spaniels high maintenance?

They are very easy to train due to their high intelligence and desire to please their owners and are usually highly food or toy driven! Therefore they require a good amount of attention to keep them occupied. They are still very affectionate dogs, and the way to their heart is usually through cuddles and belly rubs.

How long do Cocker Spaniels live for?

Life expectancy: 12 – 15 years

Originating country: England

Temperament:  Friendly, affectionate & playful.

Fun fact: A Cocker Spaniel, named Tangle, was the first cancer-detecting dog! A true hero of a breed!
